Pa Governor Ed Rendell wants to set aside $128 million dollars to boost state grants for freshmen who this fall will enter one of the 14 universities in the state system and Pa’s 14 community colleges. However, for students whose family incomes are lower than $30,000, the total cost for college would be $1,000 a year, and students whose family incomes are lower than $100,000 a year can be eligible to pay up to $7,600. However, students who plan to attend
Penn State, Pitt,
Temple and
Lincoln will not be eligible.
The state hopes this proposal would “counteract potential flight of students” from Pa.
The importance of this article is it informs incoming Pa college freshman that there will be more assistance in paying for school. This article would affect the community because it shows that it is a way to go to college without worrying about the cost. Other questions that could be asked are why freshmen from Temple, Penn State, Pitt & Lincoln can’t be eligible for the grants? This article is worthy of a follow-up because other articles from this could be if the plan actually worked or not.
