The government on Friday has officially cleared federal regulations to begin the first stem cell research trials on humans. This gives researches the right to test stem-cells on spinal injury patients. The first tests are expected to begin this summer, said Dr. Thomas Okarma, the president and CEO of the Geron Corporation. The patients will be those with the most sever spinal cord injuries, called complete spinal cord injuries. "A complete spinal cord injury has no hope of recovery below the injury," Okarma told CNN. "This is significant because it's the first clinical trial of a human embryonic-based product."
The Government has approved the testing of stem cells on critically wounded spinal patients, who have no chance of normal recovery. The first operations on these patients will begin the summer of 09. I believe stem cell research is what’s needed in order to cure some of the most deadly diseases. Opposition comes from the people that have strong religious, and pro-life ties, though this is my own opinion really why would humans be able to figure these things out if we weren’t meant to.
